[Account of a fire / Thomas Wolfe]

At the request of Aline Bernstein, Wolfe wrote an account of a fire in her New York apartment house, told from Bernstein's point of view. Bernstein wrote to Mina Kirstein Curtiss, enclosing Wolfe's manuscript. Bernstein's letter and Wolfe's manuscript written on stationery headed: 270 Park Avenue.

Bernstein met Thomas Wolfe in 1925 on a voyage between Europe and New York. Wolfe and Bernstein, the wife of a prominent New York stock broker and 18 years older than Wolfe, became lovers in Oct. 1925 and remained so for the next five years. Costume and set designer for the American theater, Aline Bernstein worked with the Lewisohn sisters at the Henry Street Settlement, designed productions for the Grand Street Follies, five Lillian Hellman plays, and two RKO spectaculars, and received a Tony award for her costumes for the opera Regina (1950), among other highlights. Mina Stein Curtiss was born on October 13, 1896, in Boston, Massachusetts. She graduated from Smith College in 1918, received a M.A. in English from Columbia University in 1920, and returned to Smith, where she was an associate professor until 1934. She was a research assistant for the Mercury Theater from 1935 to 1938, and she worked for the Office of War Information during World War II. She taught at Smith from 1940 to 1941.
